If your back hurts you are not alone. 9 out of 10 Americans will have a significant bout of low back pain in their lifetimes. This statistic is cited in myriad research articles. If your back hurts in sitting for more than 15 minutes, with lifting more than 44 lbs, and bending over forward you may greatly benefit from a new treatment strategy.
It is called directional preference. A simple way to try this is to try bending forward 5 x in standing -slowly and carefully and stop if it hurts at all. Remember the pain level from 1-10. Then try bending backwards gently with your hands on your hips 5 x in standing – and stop if it hurts at all. Remember the pain level from 1-10. Often times the pain will be less with bending back. So if the pain is less with bending back you would try to bend back gently 10 x every 2 hours. Below is the picture of the correct form for lumbar extension exercises. See below.
